In 1565, Giorgio Vasari built the Vasari Corridor, an elevated enclosed passageway that passes over the goldsmiths’ shops situated on both sides of the bridge and allowed the Medici to get to Palazzo Pitti from Palazzo Vecchio without having to walk through the city.

At the centre of the bridge, the shops are interrupted by the portrait bust of Benvenuto Cellini, a renowned goldsmith from the 16th century. This masterpiece was created in 1901 by Raffaello Romanelli.
